چکیده

Recently, Diaconescu, Moore and Witten provided a nontrivial link between K-theory and M-theory, by deriving the partition function of the Ramond-Ramond fields of Type IIA string theory from an E8 gauge theory in eleven dimensions. We give some relations between twisted K-theory and M-theory by adapting the method of [1], [2]. In particular, we construct the twisted K-theory torus which defines the partition function, and also discuss the problem from the loop group picture, in which the Dixmier-Douady class is the NeveuSchwarz field. In the process of doing this, we encounter some mathematics that is new to the physics literature. In particular, the eta differential form, which is the generalization of the eta invariant, arises naturally in this context. We conclude with several open problems in mathematics and string theory.

The Geometry of Supersymmetric Gauge Theories in Four Dimensions

We review the relations between (twisted) supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions and moduli problems in four-dimensional topology, and we study in detail the non-abelian monopole equations from this point of view. The relevance of exact results in N = 1 and N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories to the computation of topological invariants is emphasized. Some background material is provi...

Gauge Theory and Gerbes in String Theory

The reduction of the E8 gauge theory to ten dimensions leads to a loop group, which in relation to twisted K-theory has a Dixmier-Douady class identified with the Neveu-Schwarz H-field. We give an interpretation of the degree two part of the etaform by comparing the adiabatic limit of the eta invariant with the one loop term in type IIA. More generally, starting with a G-bundle, the comparison ...

A Chern-simons E8 Gauge Theory of Gravity in D = 15, Grand Unification and Generalized Gravity in Clifford Spaces

A novel Chern-Simons E8 gauge theory of Gravity in D = 15 based on an octic E8 invariant expression in D = 16 (recently constructed by Cederwall and Palmkvist) is developed. A grand unification model of gravity with the other forces is very plausible within the framework of a supersymmetric extension (to incorporate spacetime fermions) of this Chern-Simons E8 gauge theory. We review the constru...

Bound States of Type I D-particles and Enhanced Gauge Symmetry

Duality between the E8 × E8 heterotic string and Type I theory predicts a tower of D(irichlet)-particle bound states corresponding to perturbative heterotic string states. In the limit of infinite Type I coupling, some of these bound states become massless, giving rise to enhanced E8×E8 gauge symmetry. By taking a different infinite coupling limit, one can recover the E8 ×E8 gauge bosons of M-t...

Gauging the twisted Poincaré symmetry as noncommutative theory of gravitation

Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity was formulated as a gauge theory of Lorentz symmetry by Utiyama in 1956, while the Einstein-Cartan gravitational theory was formulated by Kibble in 1961 as the gauge theory of Poincaré transformations. In a noncommutative space-time with canonical commutation relations between the coordintes, Lorentz symmetry is violated and field theories constructed on ...
